BEWARE OF FORGERY AND CHECK ALTERATION SCHEMES!!

Recently, we have become aware of a rash of checks that are being stolen from the postal mail system.  To avoid falling victim, we recommend the following actions:

  • It is always a good idea to use mobile banking to monitor your account DAILY.  While reviewing your account activity, do not only look at the dollar amounts clearing your account because altered or counterfeit check amounts may actually be correct.  You should also review the check images that are clearing and note the names of the payment recipients on your checks. and the check numbers.  We have seen cases where data from checks were altered/replaced with a fictitious payee name but the payment amounts were correct.  In other cases, the check amounts and check numbers are also being altered, but not always.
  • If you discover an item in your account that appears to be altered, notify the bank immediately at 573-748-5551.
  • If the party you are paying is willing and able to accept electronic payment, consider making your payment electronically from your deposit account.   Make sure their payment website is secure before you enter your account information.
